Electrical service entrances in Sherbrooke: changes, relocation and connection

The service entrance is the mast or the conduits, the meter base and the cable to the panel. We upgrade it, move it, take it underground or connect a new building, in Sherbrooke and across the Eastern Townships. According to Hydro-Québec, only a CMEQ member can send it the work request: we handle it with Hydro-Sherbrooke, Hydro-Québec, Hydro-Magog or Hydro-Coaticook, from the request to the reconnection.

Your situation

The cases we see most often, and what we do.

I’m going from 100 A to 200 A

One more heat pump, charger or hot tub, and the load calculation exceeds what the service can supply. We redo the mast or conduits, the cable and the meter base at the new size, along with the panel, and coordinate the shutoff and reconnection with the utility.

I need to move the mast or the meter

An addition, a garage, a deck or a new roof, and the service is no longer in the right place. We move it while respecting the heights set by the Code and the utility above the ground, roofs and driveways.

I want to go underground

No more wires over the yard: the cable runs in buried conduits to the meter base. If the street line is overhead, Hydro-Québec can provide a connection point on a pole, by agreement. We pass on the trench requirements before the excavator arrives.

I’m connecting a new building

House, chalet, detached garage or workshop: we prepare the overhead or underground service and send the request to the utility as soon as the plans are ready, since its timelines don’t depend on us. If needed, a temporary service powers the site until the permanent one.

My mast was damaged

A branch, ice or a truck that was too tall. According to Hydro-Québec, the mast, the gooseneck and the bracket belong to the owner, and the connection is not restored until they are repaired. We repair what belongs to you and coordinate the rest with the utility.

What affects the price

No prices posted: every installation is different. Here is what matters, and the estimate is free, within 24 hours.

The type of work
Redoing the service in the same place, moving it, taking it underground or connecting a new building.
The amperage
A larger size changes the cable, the meter base and often the panel.
The distance to the grid
Hydro-Québec’s basic service connection covers up to 30 m; beyond that, or if a pole is needed, utility fees may apply.
The ground, for underground
Rock, fill, existing paving: the trench and conduits on your property are at your expense.
Trees near the connection
Any clearing needed is your responsibility; Hydro-Sherbrooke asks for a fully cleared 2 m corridor under the future connection.
Utility requirements
What Hydro-Sherbrooke, Hydro-Québec, Hydro-Magog or Hydro-Coaticook ask for.

« Super service de William. Il répond rapidement aux demandes et prend le temps de bien expliquer les choix aux clients. Ils se sont présenté à l’heure déterminée et le résultat du travail est clean. Ils ont pris le temps de tout tester avant de partir. Sa plate-forme d’envoi de photo pour estimation et facturation est super simple d’utilisation aussi. Bref, je recommande assurément. »

Frequently asked questions

Who sends the request to the utility?

The master electrician. According to Hydro-Québec, only CMEQ members can carry out work on an electrical installation and send it the request. With Hydro-Sherbrooke, for a new connection, you also apply for service at least seven business days before the date you want.

Can an overhead service be switched to underground?

Yes, if the utility allows it at your address. It takes a trench to the connection point, conduits, a new meter base and coordination for the shutoff and reconnection.

Who pays for the trench and conduits?

You do. According to Hydro-Québec, civil works on your property, including those for an underground service, are at your expense, at installation and at any replacement.

My mast was torn off: who pays for the repair?

The owner. According to Hydro-Québec, the mast, the gooseneck and the bracket belong to the owner, who has them repaired, and power is not restored before then. If a wire is on the ground, stay away and call 911.

How long does a connection take in Sherbrooke?

Hydro-Sherbrooke commits to connecting within seven business days of receiving the service application and the declaration of work, in a normal situation: a compliant installation, under 200 A, a connection within 30 m of the grid and a cleared corridor.

Is the power cut during the work?

Yes, during the work on the service entrance. The shutoff and reconnection are coordinated with your utility; we explain ahead of time how the day will go.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Only for large projects. It is stated in the quote.

Who does the work?

The LTE Électrique team, a family business of 6 people led by William Letendre, third-generation master electrician and CMEQ member (RBQ licence 5874-5597-01). Our electricians average more than 10 years of experience and have more than 1,500 jobs behind them.
