Where would the charger go?
How far from the electrical panel?
It affects the length of cable and the work involved.
Your electrical service amperage?
It is printed on the main breaker, at the top of the panel.
Your main heating?
Is there free space in the panel?
A level 2 charger needs a 240 V circuit, so room for a double breaker.

Guides
The right answers, before the work.
Short guides to the questions we hear most often, with their sources.
Upgrading from 100 A to 200 A: when it’s needed and how it goes
Upgrading from 100 A to 200 A becomes necessary when the Code’s load calculation exceeds what the service can supply: electric heating, an EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub. Here is what the calculation counts, the solutions that sometimes avoid the work, what the 2026 Code changes and how it goes, from the request to the utility to the power coming back on.
Read the guide EV chargersInstalling a home EV charger: steps, Code and the $600 grant
A level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240 V circuit and enough capacity at the electrical service. Here are the steps with an electrician, what the Code requires for the outlet and the circuit, the solutions when the service is tight, and Québec’s $600 grant.
Read the guide Electrical safetyBreaker keeps tripping: the causes, what to check and when to call an electrician
A breaker that trips is doing its job: it cuts a circuit that is overloaded, short-circuited or faulty. Here is how to reset it safely, how to tell the cause from when it trips, and when it is time to call a master electrician.
Read the guide Heat pumps, hot tubs and generatorsHooking up a heat pump: what the electrician checks first, and why
Before hooking up a heat pump, the electrician checks three things: the unit’s nameplate, which sets the circuit size; your service’s capacity, through the load calculation; and the location of the disconnect, within sight and within 3 m of the outdoor unit. With electric backup heat, the load climbs fast.
