Where to find electricians in Sherbrooke
The CMEQ member directory lists Québec’s electrical contractors. Each listing gives the region, address, RBQ file number and licence expiry date. The RBQ licence holder registry also lets you look up a business by name or number. Both lists are official and kept up to date: they beat a list copied onto a website.
Check the licence
- In Québec, the electrical contractor licence (subclass 16) is issued by the CMEQ on behalf of the Québec government. The RBQ does not issue this licence.
- By law, every electrical contractor must be a CMEQ member.
- Check that the licence is valid: the expiry date is on the directory listing.
Get written quotes
The CMEQ recommends getting quotes from more than one contractor, written and detailed. A good quote states:
- the work and materials planned;
- the cost before taxes;
- the hourly rate for extra work;
- the approximate duration;
- travel fees, if any.
Insist on a written contract
According to the CMEQ, the written contract is your main protection. It can be fixed-price (the price is set in advance) or hourly (an agreed rate plus materials, with expenses reported on request). It states the work and materials, the schedule, the price or rate, the rate for extra work, the cost of any connection request, and the payment terms, including deposits.
Door-to-door
A contractor who shows up at your door without being called must hold an itinerant merchant permit from the Office de la protection du consommateur, and the contract must be in writing.
In Sherbrooke: Hydro-Sherbrooke or Hydro-Québec
For a new service entrance or a 200 A upgrade, the disconnection and reconnection are done with your address’s utility: Hydro-Sherbrooke in part of the city, Hydro-Québec elsewhere. Ask whether the contractor handles the coordination.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I check that an electrician is licensed?
- Look up their name or number in the CMEQ member directory or in the RBQ licence holder registry. The directory listing shows the licence expiry date.
- Must an electrician be a CMEQ member?
- Yes. By law, every electrical contractor must be a member of the Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec, which issues their licence on behalf of the Québec government.
- How many quotes should I get?
- The CMEQ recommends getting quotes from more than one contractor, written and detailed, so you compare the same work and the same materials.
- Can I do my own electrical work?
- The RBQ publishes the list of work an individual may do themselves. For anything else, you need a licensed electrical contractor.
